Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA celebrates today’s kick-off of the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National Golf Club, which also marks the U.S. debut of Mouton Cadet as the Official Wine of the biennial golf competition.
Having previously launched an alignment with the 2014 & 2018 European Ryder Cup matches, the expansion of the partnership to this side of the Atlantic simultaneously introduces a new collaboration with wine lover and legendary golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., whose sketch of a caddie graces the bottle of this year’s limited-edition Ryder Cup wine. This special Mouton Cadet cuvée will serve as the official wine of the matches being held in Chaska, Minnesota—Sept. 27 – Oct. 2, 2016—allowing wine lovers and golf enthusiasts alike the chance to participate in one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
Hugues Lechanoine, Managing Director of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, commented, “We are honored to deepen our relationship with the Ryder Cup and expand the partnership to the US for the very first time. I can think of no better way to celebrate the ongoing camaraderie between golf’s most exciting weekend and Mouton Cadet than by collaborating with Robert Trent Jones, Jr. to bring the story behind this very special cuvée to life. When Robert and I met, we discussed the synergy between golf and wine at length—dedication to the craft, the importance of terroir and shared experiences. Robert brings his highly-tuned sensibility culled from a lifelong passion for the sport to this exceptional wine, which we look forward to sharing with Ryder Cup fans both at Hazeltine and across the U.S.”
An integral figure in American golf history, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.’s long career began as a caddie or “cadet” of his father, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., who designed championship-caliber golf courses around the world, including Hazeltine National for the 1970 U.S. Open. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jones, Jr. went on to design more than 280 courses in 40-plus countries on six continents.
Tasked with designing the “face” of Mouton Cadet’s 2016 Ryder Cup Wine, Jones, Jr. chose to honor the shared history between two family empires and adorn the limited-edition bottle with an adapted sketch of himself as a 16-year-old boy, caddying for his father on the Hazeltine golf course—a tribute to the late Jones, Sr., as well as to Baron Philippe de Rothschild, creator of Mouton Cadet and “cadet” of his own family. The architect said of the collaboration, “I am thrilled to partner with Mouton Cadet on this meaningful venture. Having attended the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine with my father and family, it’s wonderful to be back on these grounds to honor and share in that memory with some of world’s most passionate players and fans of the game.”
In addition to the limited-edition Special Cuvée, Mouton Cadet will serve its white and rosé wines to guests of the 2016 Ryder Cup in all Hazeltine National Golf Club hospitality lounges, bars and concessions, as well as in the International Pavilion and the Clubhouse.
The Mouton Cadet Ryder Cup Special Cuvée has been available since March 2016 at Hazeltine National Golf Club and in select markets globally including in America New York, Florida, Illinois, California, Texas, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Minnesota (SRP $14.99).
